Wick traffic trauma

LAST week, we had the opportunity to visit the consultation meeting held by Development Securities Plc for the proposed development of The Body Shop site at Wick into a Morrisons supermarket.

Traffic is a huge problem within the area, and it was clear from the response from the company’s representatives that they were not fully aware of the issue we face today.

The A259 around the Wick roundabout area is already heavily laden with traffic, and the introduction of 600 homes proposed on the Courtwick Lane site, along with this store, will only make matters worse.

The data that Development Securities Plc presented gave nowhere near a true representation of traffic flow for the area, and upon questioning, we were told that money prevented them from visiting the area more often to get more information.

The computer-generated video of the proposed traffic was also incorrect, as we were informed that the graphics were not to scale with respect to the road infrastructure, so this gave a false impression when looking at the extra traffic.

It was also explained to us that the extension of the Fitzalan Road, coming up to meet the A259, would continue towards the other proposed development of 1,800 homes within the proposed North Littlehampton scheme, and that Development Securities PLC would be contributing towards a new road bridge to span the railway.

However, the road will then stop, as there will not be enough money available to continue the road up towards the A27 roundabout at Crossbush.

This means an extra increase once again of traffic along the A259, and will only lead to gridlock within the not-too-distant future.

I suggest that anyone living on the Courtwick Lane/Kingfisher Drive estates, and anyone living on any of the roads adjoining the A259, should express their concerns by writing to Neil Crowther, Director of Planning and Housing, Arun District Council, Maltravers Road, Littlehampton.
