Our girl Katie makes a splash at Bognor Regis Birdman

Having reported on last year's Birdman event, and its cancellation in July, after some persuasion from the organisers, I swapped my notebook and pen for a wand and wings and made a splash for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

The nerves really started to set in during the safety briefing on the pier.

Having only been on the pier a few times I had never really realised just how high it was.

Then with shaking hands and a slightly light-headed feeling it was time to get into my Observer Fairy costume.

I absolutely loved my outfit and I would like to say a huge thank you to the pupils and the staff at Nyewood Junior School who made me such a fantastic costume at very short notice.

Then after photos and interviews on the pier it was time for the main event.

I was fourth to jump and getting more nervous with every second.

By the time my name was called I was starting to wonder if I would be able to go through with it.

Standing at the edge of the scaffolding I made the mistake of looking down.

I then decided it was now or never and made the leap of faith.

The sea was not as cold as I expected and in less than one minute I was safely inside the rescue boat.
