'Parking fees are killing our trade'

TRADERS in Worthing say that high parking charges in the town centre are killing trade and that parking is 40 per cent cheaper in other parts of the county.

Local businesses say they have seen their trade and footfall drop and that the town is losing customers to other areas.

John Wildman, from butchers John Wildman and Sons in Portland Road, said he did not have a problem with on-street parking costs and accepted that people had to park legally but said: "I want to know why our charges in the multi-storey car park ares basically dearer than any other town?"

In both Buckingham and High Street mult-storey car parks it costs 1.60 an hour to park. On-street parking in the town centre costs 80p for an hour.

Mr Wildman said: "A lot of people who come into the shop say Worthing's got too expensive to park. How can it be dearer in the multi-storey car park than on street? It's not going to attract people to the town with multi-storey charges like that."
