Paul's got the White Stuff

Nothing was going to stop the milk tanker getting to farms around Ninfield and Crowhurst at the weekend.

The country lanes were thick with snow and ice but driver Paul Saunders never doubted he would get through for collection.

On Sunday, when most of us never even considered venturing out, his day began at 5.30am when he left home in Chelmsford to start his round of nine farms, starting in Edenbridge and ending at Canterbury in the early evening.

He came into our area via the A22 from Ashford Forest and said the only problematic area was Herstonceux where the roads were "really dodgy".

He then collected from the Van de Meer farm in Ponts Green followed by Hye House Farm in Crowhurst, run by Frank and Brian Ashby, which he arrived at via Catsfield then Watermill Lane.

He credited farmers with keeping the lanes and country roads clear and commented: "All this milk was not collected yesterday, but rather than tip it we have collected today."

Local and national news at the weekend highlighted the vast amount of milk being thrown away by dairy farmers when tankers were not able to get through because of ice and difficult driving conditions.

Paul said his collection on Sunday was "never in doubt" and said: "We have collected all the way through, and barely missed any milk at all".
