To carve the angel he used a piece of slate from his garden which he brought back Snowdonia.

He said: "I was furloughed so I wanted do something rather than sit at home doing nothing.

"I am a contracts manager for a stone restoration company, I trained as a stonemason, but haven't picked up my old tools for 20 odd years. I had a piece of slate sitting in my back garden which I brought back from Snowdonia years ago, I did a sketch initially which happened to be the same size as to slate, so I thought I'd have a go.

"I decided an angel for the Nurses of the NHS."

John spent a couple of hours a day over three weeks.

He added: "I hope to be able to give it to The Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton

"I'm so glad we have such a great NHS they are absolute heroes all of them."
