Burgess Hill sewers make scrubs for NHS workers

When their work had been postponed due to the lockdown, they decided to put their skills to good use and support the NHS at the same time.

The sewers, who are all members of the Curtain and Blind Makers Friendly Forum, have raised more than £11,000 so far to cover the cost of fabric and distribution.

A spokesman for the group said: “This is not for profit cause and we are not looking to be paid for our time.

“Unfortunately for a lot of us our income significantly reduced and we can’t afford the fabric, so all we are asking for is support to get these fabrics, as soon as possible, so that we can support our NHS teams throughout the country.

“Funds have rolled in and many have donated more than once.”

The group has made more than 2000 scrubs so far, and hope to start making doctors’ gowns.

Abigail Lock, one of the sewers, said: “We collated a huge team of sewers locally, all at different levels of skills, which have all been used whether cutting fabric, making waistbands, making bags, sewing scrubs.

“We have been driving around Sussex delivering and collecting fabrics and scrubs to hospitals, GP surgeries and more to save the wait with Royal Mail.”
