Daredevil David Edwards, 77, jumped out of a plane at over 10,000 feet in a bid to raise more than £1,000 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

David undertook the skydive in memory of his sister-in-law, Dot, who died at the hospice last year. His original target was to raise £500 but after many generous donations decided to try and double it.

“I wanted to support the outstanding work and care provided by St Wilfrid's, which many of my friends and loved ones have also experienced. The staff go above and beyond for their patients,” David said.

“It was the first and only time I’ve ever done a skydive. My friends and family thought I was mad but also said well done. When I was up in the plane and felt my instructor’s hand on my shoulder as we were about to jump, I was quite nervous. In the first few seconds we got up to around 120 miles per hour, and the best bit was definitely when the parachute opened. It was a great experience, but I won’t do it again.”

Wife Anita added: “I was a bit worried about David but gradually got used to the idea. I was very pleased when it was all over!”

Fundraising Assistant, Jasmin King said: “We are so grateful to David for his amazing efforts. You don’t hear of many people who are brave enough to jump out of a plane – especially at 77-years-old! He and Anita regularly visit the hospice for a chat, tea and cake and we’re enormously grateful for this donation and all their support.”

St Wilfrid’s Hospice provides high-quality care and support for people across Eastbourne, Seaford, Hailsham, Uckfield, Heathfield (and all points between) with life-limiting illnesses.
