A woman in Hailsham has turned 100 and shared her secrets to a long and happy life.

Shirley Holmes is a resident at Care UK’s Bowes House on Battle Road. She turned 100 on January 5 and celebrated with balloons, banners, and a special birthday cake.

Shirley grew up in Nottingham, went to a convent school and then worked as a secretary. In her private life, Shirley loved theatre trips, gardening, and listening to music.

When asked about her secret to a long and happy life, Shirley said: “No men, no alcohol, no smoking and lots of dancing!”

Karen Milligan, from Bowes House, said: “Shirley is a beloved resident at Bowes House, and it was a pleasure to help her celebrate this tremendous milestone.

“Everything we do centres around helping residents to live fulfilling lives, which is why we are always eager to mark special occasions. Shirley's 100th birthday was no exception, and it was a delight to raise a glass in her honour!"
