Lucy Bowyer from Rye Harbour Nature Reserve gave a fascinating talk at Pett WI on Friday June 20. Members heard about salt marshes and reed beds, the wild life and the many plants that can be found in the area, as well as the work that Lucy and her colleagues have done with local school children. They also heard about plans for the future such as improving the Visitor Centre and providing a classroom on site.

Church Services on Sunday June 29 – Morning Worship to celebrate St Peter, St Mary & St Peter, Pett at 9:30am led by Meriel Deasy; Sunday Service at the Methodist Chapel at 10:45am.

Monday June 30 will see major changes to recycling in Pett and Pett Level. Briefly, the green bin currently used for garden waste will now be used for cardboard, newspapers, paper, books, telephone directories, food and drink cans, clean kitchen foil and foil trays, aerosols, Tetra Pak drinks cartons, plastic food pots, tubs and trays, plastic bottles, plastic film and bags and blister packs.

The boxes currently used for recycling can be used for glass bottles and jars. The black bin will continue to be used for normal rubbish. Also, if you have ordered a brown bin, this is for garden waste.

The collection day for both Pett and Pett Level will now be Monday and on Monday June 30 there will be a normal rubbish collection and a brown bin collection. This will be followed by another normal rubbish collection on Monday July 7 with recycling (green bin and boxes) and the brown bin collection on July 14.

POPP on Tuesday July 1 will feature Caroline Morris, the Hat Lady. And don’t forget that there is the Community Fruit and Veg stall at POPP every Tuesday. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

On Wednesday July 2 Sally and her team will be ready to welcome you with excellent coffee and a great selection of cakes at the Village Coffee Morning. Everyone is welcome from 10am at Pett Village Hall.

On Thursday July 3 Flicks in the Village will be showing 12 Years A Slave (15).

This award-winning historical slave-narrative drama is directed by Steve McQueen and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film follows the experience of Solomon Northup (Ejiofor), an African-American living with a wife and two children in Saratoga, New York, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery by men claiming to offer him work as a circus musician. Transported by ship to New Orleans, it isn’t long before he is given a new name and sold to William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), a relatively empathetic slave owner. But confrontations with the cruel and violent overseer John Tibeats (Paul Dano) lead to Solomon being passed on by Ford to the extremely abusive and alcoholic planter Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), who rules his slaves with a whip in one hand and a Bible in the other. Believing the only hope of regaining his freedom is to remain passive for the time being, Solomon ceases fighting against the illegitimacy of his situation until salvation is offered to him by a kindly labourer named Bass (Brad Pitt).

The film starts at 7:30pm with refreshments served from 7pm. Membership forms are available on the night or you can always pop into the Butchers shop in Pett and grab an application form.
