Police concern about Worthing nightclub security

POLICE have called for the manager and security staff at a Worthing nightclub to be sacked after complaints of attacks on clubbers.

In a statement to Worthing Council's licensing committee, police have claimed door staff at The Pier nightclub have used "excessive levels of force and violence" on customers throughout 2008 and 2009.

They have also accused manager Matthew Stewart of preventing attacks from being investigated by failing to provide CCTV footage to officers and refusing to name a bar manager police wanted to arrest for an assault.

One clubber claimed that, last August, he was taken to a CCTV blind-spot by security staff and assaulted.

On May 8 of this year, CCTV footage showed a man and a woman being beaten violently by two male door staff, neither of whom was wearing identification.

Mr Stewart repeatedly refused to name one of the men, who police later found had criminal connections, until July 4.

Worthing Council's licensing committee will meet tomorrow (Wednesday, December 2) to decide whether to agree that the removal of Mr Stewart and the security team be made a condition of the club's licence.

The owners of The Pier nightclub, Worthing Bars Ltd, have agreed with the conditions requested, as well as a two-week suspension of the club's licence from January 21 next year to allow the new management and security team to "acclimatise".
