An application, to change the use of land at the coach park on Banjo Road and on the promenade by the lighthouse, was approved by the development control committee on Wednesday (October 28).

The plans, which were submitted by the council itself, had been deferred by the committee in May when members said they hadn’t been given enough information to make a decision.

There were also concerns about safety and the loss of coach parking spaces at Banjo Road.

Planning officer Juan Baeza said the changes would leave space for ten coaches, which was considered ‘more than ample’.

The pitches will be temporary – only open for a few months each year – and will be managed by the council’s estates and property department.

The lighthouse site will only include recreation and entertainment pitches, with no food stalls allowed, while the Banjo Road site will be for recreation, entertainment and food, though no alcohol will be allowed.

Most of the committee supported the application, with only Hugh Coster (Ind, Aldwick East) abstaining.

Ricky Bower (Con, East Preston) said: “We need to strengthen the offer, as it were, for Littlehampton. There is a good opportunity here to assist in attracting more tourists and day trippers to the town and the district.”
