£1m investment by Littlehampton firm worthy of the label ‘success’

Directors and the workforce of an expanding Littlehampton business are celebrating a £1m investment which was opened by the town’s MP on Friday (January 11).

Nick Gibb cut a ribbon to mark the commissioning of a state-of-the-art label printing press at AJS Labels on the Lineside Industrial Estate.

The Dutch-made equipment, the largest and most complex of its kind installed by the manufacturers, can print 100,000 labels an hour .

Mr Gibb, who, in April, 2009, visited AJS Labels to relaunch the business, taken over by new owners Andrew and Jayne Scrimgeour, congratulated them and the whole workforce on what they had achieved in the past four years.

He told the employees and management: “With this £1m investment, at a time when the economy feels very uncertain about the future. what you are bringing to our town is economic certainty.”

Back in 2009, AJS had a turnover of £5.8m and 54 staff in Littlehampton and a smaller operation in Lancashire. Last year turnover was £7.3m and the workforce has grown to 66, with most of the new employees recruited from Littlehampton.

In October, AJS won the Label Printer of the Year Award for the second year running.
