Retiring postman Wyns some hearts in Aldwick

Postman Wyn Woon was on the receiving end of a delivery from friendly Aldwick residents.

He was presented with a big card and a bottle of champagne as he made his way around Faresmead with letters and mail shots for the final time.

The cul-de-sac's residents gathered outside number 17 to make the surprise presentation as a goodbye and thank-you for his efforts.

They had formed themselves into Wyn's Fan Club because of his popularity.

Wyn, who lives in the Hawthorn Road area, told them: "I had no idea I would receive a send off like this.

"My six years' delivering the mail to you all has been the most enjoyable period of my time as a postman."

The presentation came during a working day, even if it was Wyn's final one in the area, to mean that he only had time to pose for a few photographs and a brief chat.

He is now delivering letters elsewhere in Aldwick for what he hopes will be the final year of his just over three decades as a postman.

He plans to retire in 2009 from a job he has always enjoyed.

"I just like being outside whatever the weather," he explained. "You are either made for this job or you're not '“ and I love it."

Even if Wyn retires, he has no intenion of leaving Bognor.

But he is planning a big family holiday to Bali next year to celebrate his retirement as well as attend the wedding of his youngest daughter, Carla, in June.
