Road crash causes chaos at rush hour

TRAFFIC chaos gripped Bexhill during Tuesday morning's rush hour after a car and motorcycle were in collision on the A259 De La Warr Road, Bexhill, creating huge tailbacks in both directions.

Police sealed off the road between its junction with Dorset Road and the Ravenside retail and leisure park, and the Kent Air Ambulance landed close to the Dorset Road junction to be immediately on hand if needed.

At the scene, Sgt Phil Duffy, of Sussex Police, said: "The collision was reported to us at 8.01am. It involved a black Vauxhall Astra car and a motorcycle, the rider of which was injured.

"The road was closed to allow the air ambulance helicopter to land nearby and for paramedics to attend to the casualty.

"We also had to await the arrival of a specialist accident investigator."

Sgt Duffy added: "We appreciate that this is a particularly busy time of day, with people driving to work or taking children to school, and so we'd like to thank motorists who were delayed for their forbearance."

Michael Huggins, driver of a Wealden District Council glass recycling wagon travelling west along De La Warr Road, described what he had seen.

He said: "I was following the car, which was being driven by a woman, and she indicated to turn right into a private drive.

"I slowed down to let her turn, but as she did so a motorcycle passing alongside me collided with her car."

Although the air ambulance was in attendance, the motorcyclist was taken to the Conquest Hospital, Hastings, by a road ambulance and later discharged after treatment for minor injuries.

The car driver was shocked but also escaped any serious injury.
