School crossing in prospect - at last

EFFORTS to create a pedestrian crossing in Turkey Road, Sidley, to help safeguard pupils making their way to All Saints' Primary School and Bexhill High School are moving ahead.

Back in April 2010, Emma Turner collected more than 200 signatures on a petition highlighting an urgent need for a pedestrian crossing in Turkey Road, which was received by East Sussex county councillor Michael Ensor at the Sidley Neighbourhood Panel meeting.

Cllr Ensor in turn presented it to the chairman of East Sussex County Council on May 18, 2010. Cllr Ensor said: “Over this past year the proposal for a crossing in Turkey Road was approved as a priority and a suitable budget for the work has been identified.

“The detailed design for a crossing has now been completed and will soon be presented to the ESCC lead Cabinet member for transport and environment, Cllr Carl Maynard, for the decision to proceed with the work.”

Cllr Ensor said the design had been shown to Mrs Turner and her friends for their comments. The opening of the new High School last year had added to the urgency for a safe crossing place for children.

Cllr Ensor said: “It has taken a long time and involved much discussion at County Hall to recognise the priority need for this crossing in Turkey Road, but I am delighted that this positive progress has been made in designing the scheme and securing the budget to do the work.

“We look forward to seeing the completion of the crossing in the New Year.”
