School picks upspecial award aspupils take over

They were involved in Take Over Day, a national event set up by the Children’s Commissioner which gives young people the chance to work with adults for the day and be involved in decision-making.

Kate Tugwell, from the school, said; “We were the only school in the Hastings and Rye area to win an award for our efforts and received £150.”

For Year 5 pupils at the school it was a chance to get a taste of life as a teacher.

Kate Tugwell said: “This has become an annual event and each year the pupils become more confident and competent.

“Every child in Year 6 was given the role of one of the teachers or office staff.

“They dressed in smart clothes and had to plan and teach every class in the school.

“ The younger pupils responded very well and reported that they really enjoyed being taught by the older children.

“Some pupils had the chance to be a Head teacher for the day and they led a sharing assembly and carried out various duties at break times. Others were a caretaker for the day and undertook a health and safety audit.

“Several pupils had attended an anti-bullying conference on the previous day on the theme of cyber-bullying.

“These pupils prepared a Power Point presentation about staying safe online which they delivered to children in Year 5 and Year 6.

“ One of the Guestling pupils was also lucky enough to win a county wide competition with a poster design aimed at preventing Cyber Bullying.

“Overall the day was a great success and it gave the children a taste of life in the world of work.”

A spokesperson for the event said: “Children benefit from the opportunity to experience the world of work and make their voices heard, while adults and organisations gain a fresh perspective on what they do.

“We hope this will help break down barriers between generations and encourage children’s active involvement in their communities.

“The important thing was to join in and giving opportunities to children and young people.”
