Scouts all shipshape

Sea Scouts in Felpham have passed their latest inspection with flying colours.

The group was assessed by Lt Cdr DT Griffiths, of the Royal Navy, to be worthy ambassadors for the service.

He said the 30 boys and girls aged between 10 and 15 were ably led by a dedicated team of adults. His verdict enabled the group to continue to hold the Admiralty recognition which has been given continuously since 1963. Its president, Mike Hullett, said: 'It is good to see there are no half measures with this group.'

The evening inspection began with the traditional Pipe the Side ceremony ably performed by Senior Patrol Leader Oliver Lewis (14).

Matthew Farrant (14), acting as officer of the day, formally welcomed Lt Cdr Griffiths on board and introduced him to Scout Leader Skipper Tim Holland.

The ceremony of the colours followed when the Red Ensign with the Scout badge was attended to in the traditional Navy way by Signalman Thomas Holland (12) and Bosun's Mate Kerrie Lewis (13). Lt Cdr Griffiths took time to inspect each Scout. He assessed standard of dress, bearing, drill, badgework and nautical knowledge.

The land-based section of the inspection ended with the ceremonial evening colours and prayer which was said by one of the troop's most recent recruits, Tessa Shipton (11).
