Sculptures 'saved' by campaign

THE long battle to save 'one of the country's finest 20th century public sculptures' from being removed has been won.

Worthing's Desert Quartet, at the side of the Montague Centre in Liverpool Gardens, were given grade II* listed status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in May last year.

In June last year the Avon Group, the developers of the Montague Centre, asked for a review of this decision but the Government has now ruled the listed status will remain.

The listing followed a campaign by the Worthing Society, which feared the Avon Group, would try to remove the statues.

The listing allows them to remain at the site, for which they were originally commissioned.
