Shelter's splash and cash in Chichester and Bognor

Staff and clients at a homeless shelter have raised more than £400 by doing a sponsored swim to fund an on-site allotment.

The allotment at St Joseph's night shelter in Hunston provides fresh vegetables for those staying at the shelter and at the day centres in Chichester and Bognor Regis.

The team took part in a relay, swimming 20 lengths each at Arun Leisure Centre in Bognor.

The money will go towards a buying a greenhouse at the allotment, which has already had successful harvests of tomatoes, potatoes, runner beans, rocket, cucumbers, carrots and parsnips.

Project worker for Stonepillow, which runs St Joseph's, Stephen Higham said: "The swim was good, it went really well.

"We think we have collected in excess of 400. The clients that took part enjoyed it, I think they found it hard.

"We rely on donations for food, most of it's tinned, but this allows us to give fresh vegetables so we can give better meals, and then there is the satisfaction for the clients involved which is great.

"We are hoping in the future we will be able to possibly sell a few bits of veg here and there to keep it self-sufficient.

"It's a lot of fun getting us out in the open air. They are the ones helping themselves."
