Skatepark boost

THE re-built skatepark at Galley Hill was formally re-opened on Saturday - a day ahead of the Big Spin event at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill

.

Replacement features include quarter pipes, flat banks, sub boxes, ledges and a pyramid.

Rother sports development officer Adrian Gaylon said the council has worked closely with young people and specialist local firm, The Source Skateparks Ltd, to help provide a solution for the site, which would be popular with users.

Despite high wind and threatening rain, the skatepark was in use as the launch party gathered.

Adrian said: "What I like is that, already, it is getting a lot of use and is popular.

"Consultation included the type of surface and equipment, matched against the geographical nature of the site and the budget available.

"In particular the design has been aimed at skateboarders more than BMXers and with equipment suitable for all levels of ability. By using local companies and the expertise of The Source and ex-professional rider Mark Findlay the district council is confident that the site will be just what the area needs.

"To compliment the improved facilities there are other initiatives planned with skaters and riders to ensure the best use is made of the equipment.

"This includes a taster day and a showcase of professional talent at the Big Spin event...

"This was extremely successful last year and built upon the 2004 Eastpak event held in Devonshire Square.

"The Big Spin has once again provided a good platform for involving local youngsters with Bexhill High pupils involved in building the ramps for the event."

Cabinet portfolio holder Cllr Deirdre Williams was present as Source partner Rich Moore and the firm's design manager Matt Mattoss explained the range of features, which include grind boxes.

Matt said: "Because it's such a small area we tried to create as much street-orientated things as possible."
