The branch in London Road, St Leonards, is one of a number of Crown branches across the country, those directly owned by Post Office Ltd, under review by the company.

It said it is seeking to replace or relocate directly-run branches in 20 locations.

In these areas, the Post Office added it will advertise for suitable potential franchise partners and businesses that have the potential to open new branches in the area.

In March 2014, Hastings’ main post office in Cambridge Road closed and moved to WH Smith in Priory Meadow, despite a petition attracting more than 6,000 signatures in protest.

Roger Gale, general manager of the Post Office Crown Network, said: “Some Crown branches are continuing to grow profitably but others cannot do so due factors such rising rents, changing town centres or other local circumstances.

“We need to adapt our approach so we can secure access to our services in these areas for the long term.

“By working with partners to locate Post Office branches with other retail businesses we can keep branches at the heart of communities, providing services for our customers cost-effectively and often with the benefit of longer opening hours.

The Post Office said most of the company’s network of 11,500 branches are already run on a franchise or agency basis with retailers.

The changes to the Crown branch network are part of a major modernisation programme, it added.
