St Mary's pupils making news

Breaking news - pupils from St Mary's school visited the Observer office this week to find out where stories come from.

Eight pupils from class 7P questioned deputy editor John Dowling about the workings of an editorial office and how newspapers are put together.

They were accompanied by teacher Maureen Purton, assistants Donna Anderson and Lenka Dursover, and student Sasha Peppiatt.

Maureen said: "They are doing a topic called - What's In The News?

"They have been looking at the difference between local news, national news and international news, and are in the process of making up their own little class newspaper as a project.

"This class is lovely...they are very enthusiastic. They are excited about coming to visit and have good listening skills and are very into this. They have all brought in little snippets of news from their home town, and shown a lot of enthusiasm.

"A topic like this brings out their expressive language skills and they really get excited about things going on around them."
