Tesco expansion threat to town?

PLANS by Tesco for a major extension to its Littlehampton superstore have sparked fears that the town centre could be hit by the scheme.

Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket group, wants to extend the Broadpiece store by almost 30 per cent, from 5,245sq m to 6,763sq m.

Details of the plans emerged just a couple of weeks after Sainsbury's opened its new Littlehampton town centre supermarket in the former High Street Somerfield premises. That has been seen as a welcome move by Littlehampton traders, who expect to see their own businesses do better now that there are two food stores again in the main shopping area.

However, they now fear that the potential gains from the arrival of Sainsbury's could be undermined by Tesco stripping more business from the town centre.
