Tories in call to liftbasic tax threshold

Radical tax changes would dramatically change lives, a Conservative MP told party members at a Shripney meeting.

Charles Walker, the MP for Broxbourne, outlined his thoughts to lift some 300,000 people out of the basic tax bracket.

This would be done if the tax threshold was raised to 12,500 over a period of five years. The current situation where people on 5,000 paid tax forced them into relying on the state and gave rise to a culture of dependency, said Mr Walker, a member of the House of Commons public administration committee.

'There are too many people claiming tax credits and it could be avoided,' he told more than 40 members of the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton Conservative Association at the Robin Hood Hotel.

He was greeted at the meeting by Bognor's MP, Nick Gibb, Arun District Council leader Cllr Gill Brown and county councillor Robin Brown.
