The monthly Family Sung Eucharist in St Mary’s Church starts at 9.30am on Sunday, followed by refreshments in the Community Hall.

Also in the Hall, the monthly Messy Church takes place at 4pm on Tuesday (February 4).

Next Saturday (February 8) the 4th Annual Evening of Poetry & Prose takes place in the Hall, starting at 7.15pm. These evenings have been extremely successful, a welcome break from the wintry weather, an opportunity to sit back and enjoy one another’s readings, ranging from the humorous to the poignant and sad. If you would like to be one of the readers, you’re invited to prepare a passage or two of your favourite poetry or prose and bring them along with you. Alternatively, you may prefer just to listen. During the course of the evening a delicious two-course hot meal will be served, included in the modest ticket price of £12.50. There will also be a licensed bar. All proceeds from this event will again be divided between the church funds of Udimore and Brede. To give the chefs an idea of how many to cater for, it would be enormously helpful if you could ring Robert Wheeler (01797 222009) or Gary Marriott (01424 882412) by noon on the Friday.

As I mentioned in this column in October, Sussex Police have published an extremely informative and helpful booklet on the astonishingly wide of scams now being practised on us all by the criminal fraternity. I’ve just been sent some copies of this booklet and have two to spare. If you’d like one, please give me a ring (01797 223055). You’ll find it quite an eye-opener!

If you see dead badgers or foxes by the roadside, it’s a good idea to report them to Rother District Council. The usual number for this (01424 730344) seemed to be out of order earlier this week, but if it’s still not working I suggest you try 01424 787000.

Potholes are also worth reporting, not least because the County Council is responsible for the cost of repairing the damage one may cause your vehicle, as long as it was already on their list of potholes needing repair. You can do this on the Council’s website (www.eastsussex.gov.uk) by following the reasonably easy links. You’ll need to let them have details of the exact location and approximate size of the pothole(s).
