Utd's Ronaldo helps disabled footballers

A SONG written in tribute to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo is being put to good use to help disabled footballers.

Mark Lewis, 10, composed the tune, 'One Only One Cristiano' on a day off sick from school and posted it on the video website YouTube.

What he didn't expect was for the song, propelled by the player's amazing club form, to become a web phenomenon.

In just a few weeks the track has received over thirty thousand hits. Following a recent Manchester United match 5,000 people listened to the song in just one evening.

Now Mark and his dad, Raj, have decided to put its popularity to good use.

They have set up a website where the song can be purchased as a ringtone with profits going to the 1066 Specials - a charity which helps young people and adults with disabilities and special needs to play football.

Mark launched the initiative at the Buxton Drive home of 1066 Specials' goalkeeper, 12-year-old Sam Atkinson, this week.

Sam, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, is a passionate Manchester United fan and lists Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney as his favourite players.

After listening to the song, Sam said: "It's good. I really like it."

M

ark, of Dorset Road, said: "My dad said I should make the most of my time and thought we should write a song. He said to write about something I love.

"He thought it was going to be about him, but I did a song about Ronaldo!

"The music had 200 hits in two hours and then we had lots in one night. Lots of people say they like the song."

The new website also features a competition where visitors can guess how many goals Ronaldo will score this season. Winners will get a free ringtone.

The site will be used to help the charity until the end of the season.

Harold Lawrence, 1066 Specials publicity officer, said: "It is such a marvellous gesture.

"I think the fact the Specials have found a way into the consciousness of people is wonderful and this can only help to raise our profile. I am full of admiration for what has been done and I think it has been done for the best possible reasons.

"I can't promise all of our players will want the ringtone though - we have a lot of Chelsea fans and a few Liverpool ones as well!"
