Victorian Felpham maisonette a stone's throw from the beach

Good things come in small packages, as far as the vendors of a light and airy Victorian beachside home are concerned.

A stone’s throw from Felpham Beach, 8 Canning Road is a charming maisonette flat with oodles of character and is thought to date back to the 1850s.

Its owners, Dan and Tracy Wells, said their sunny, south-facing home is better known to their family and friends as ‘The Egg Box’.

Tracy said: “Dan’s nickname for me is Egg and when we moved into the flat, it was dubbed ‘The Egg Box’ – all my friends and family call it this and address post to that effect.

“It’s great fun and an easy place to live – we have frequent visitors pop down for the weekend and we all just fit in and camp out, and they’ll be sad for it to be sold, too.”

The couple are putting their home on the market because they need more space for children and grandchildren.

Tracy said: “I actually cried when we decided to put it on the market.

“It’s such a lovely, quaint and well-spaced house; me and my husband have one big bedroom upstairs which is the full width of the property, plus there’s a little, cosy room that’s a second bedroom, a really big bathroom and two toilets and a modern kitchen where we can easily fit four round a table.”

One of the high spots has been living so close to the beach: “I walk up the road to the beach three times a day with my big dog, Gibson, who’s a wire-haired vizsla.

“It only takes 100 steps to get there and when the tide’s out he can run on the sand, too.”

Gibson also has his own comfortable spot on The Egg Box’s south-facing balcony.

Tracy said: “There’s a bed for the dog and a lounger for me to read my book or have a little nap.

“There’s sun all day long and it doesn’t move around until 7pm in the summer.

“If you look up, you can see the beach-side Lobster Pot café at the end of the road and get a glimpse of the sea and sailboats as they go by.”

Tracy said another plus is the chance to live in the village of Felpham, with shops, pubs and takeaways a three or four-minute stroll down the road and Bognor town centre just a 15-minute walk.

With this in mind, who would like living at 8 Canning Road?

Tracy said: “I would love for it to go to someone who is going to enjoy it as it’s just a lovely place to live.”

She said: “A young couple would benefit from it, even if they had a baby, as there’s the lovely little second room, or it would suit someone who’d like to downsize.

“Ideally, it should be somebody who loves the beach!

“I don’t miss having the garden - I don’t have to mow the lawn, just sit on my balcony.”
