Pat Glue, Stonepillow’s supported housing manager, said: “Although Stonepillow have other supported accommodation within the Arun district, the other accommodation is for clients who need more intensive support, whilst the potential clients for Nelson Road, having been with Stonepillow for longer, are in need of less support and more of a community feel to their temporary home.”

A ‘justification statement’, drawn up by Chichester based architecture and planning consultant Whaleback, outlines altering 27 Nelson Road from a one storey bungalow into a two storey house ‘of similar proportion to others in the vicinity’.

It states the development will see Stonepillow aim ‘to establish a ‘community home’ with a strong culture of ‘life change ethos’ for people who have previously experienced homelessness’.

Ms Glue explained it will be a much needed addition, a view supported by a report by Arun dated April 2015 - March 2016 which illustrated the need. It concluded a total of 782 people to be ‘at risk of homelessness’ locally.

More information about the plans, which are open for comments until August 18 with decision due by September, will be featured in this week’s Observer.
