CONCERNED Arun councillors met Ford Prison's governor Fiona Radford last Thursday to discuss the leaked memo outlining plans to build a new prison next to the existing one.

Ms Radford and Arun's leader Gill Brown, chief executive Ian Sumnall and cabinet member for community safety Roger Elkins discussed the memo and the governor gave more detail about the four options for a category C prison designed to hold up to 720 more-dangerous criminals.

Speaking to the Gazette before the meeting, Ms Radford said she was looking forward to allaying fears the leaked options in the memo had prompted.

She said: "It was very frustrating they were leaked, because it is concerning to the council and to local people and I don't want to make them anxious.

"I look forward to reassuring the council the options are just ideas we were asked to send to the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) and we have not yet heard back from them."
