The serpent, thought to be a boa constrictor, was found at Rustington Walk by surprised members of the public on Monday (May 4).

Colin Brewer was one of the first people to stumble upon the snake basking in the sun on the pavement.

The Meads resident said, “I thought it was funny. I observed social distancing taking a photo and thought it was very silly.

“I was just walking along, I was out for my one hour daily exercise

“I was going along the pavement and there was a group of people looking at the snake. It was right there on the pavement, beneath the Hydro Hotel.

“I think it must have been dumped. Its head was underneath the bushes and it bum was sticking out.”

Colin, of Dalton Road, said he was the only one with signal so he rang the police. Within 20 minutes, a council worker arrived at the scene and managed to wrangle the snake into a bin bag.

Colin said, “It was complete Monty Python. Really very strange.”

But he said, despite the bizarre situation, it was concerning, “It was big enough I reckon, this could have gobbled up a newborn baby. It’s a dangerous thing.

“I think people need to laugh in today’s climate but it’s a serious issue, I think police need to be looking into this.

“The hero is the man who took it away.”

Eastbourne council said a member of its Environment First Team rescued the snake

The reptile would have died quite quickly if it had not been found due to the temperature being too cold, a spokesperson said. They thanked Colin for reporting it.

According to the council, the snake is now being looked after by a reptile specialist.
