Wettest July recorded in five years

DESPITE a the sun-drenched week, more rain fell in Bognor Regis last month than in any July for five years.

The total rainfall of 75.2mm was the highest since the 81.2mm endured in 2002. It was well above the 42.57mm seasonal average.

Nineteen days during July were wet. The wettest time was in the early hours of the 20th when almost an inch '“ 23.9mm '“ deluged unfortunate residents and visitors in a torrential downpour.

Surprisingly, though, the amount of sunshine at 262.1 hours was above the expected level of 239.1 hours. The sunniest day was the 22nd with 14.5 hours.

The temperature failed to live up to the seasonal expectations. The mean maximum was 19.5C, compared to 20.5C, and the minimum was 13.7C against the norm of 13.6C.

Highest temperature was the 22.2C (72F) on the 24th and the lowest was the chilly 6.8C (44.2F) on the 30th.
