During the council meeting it was agreed to provide grants to some local organisations these included the parish church, Good Companions and the Village Hall committee to continue to improve the facilities at the Hall.

The economic cost of around £5-10 billion per annum and personal impact to victims of scams was identified by Councillor Scott and information about a National Trading Standards project was given. Friends Against Scams aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams. There are both local awareness sessions and online training to help individuals become “friends” to enable them to offer support and information to local residents, particularly those who might be isolated in rural communities, more information can be found at www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk

PARISH CHURCH NEWS: The Mothering Sunday service at Whatlington last week was well attended and bunches of daffodils were handed to all the ladies present.

Next week’s church service at Whatlington will be the 09.30 Holy Communion.

FILM CLUB: After the unremitting violence of the last movie shown at Whatlington Film Club – the new version of The Magnificent Seven – the next screening offers a more heart warming view of humanity.

Captain Fantastic stars Viggo Mortensen – Aragorn from Lord of the Rings – who, with his wife, is devoted to the upbringing of six children in their wilderness home.

Living off-grid, he instils the virtues of socialism and self-reliance in his offspring. But his wife’s illness forces the family to move to the ‘real world’ where they are exposed to US commercialism in its best and worst forms. Rifts occur within the family – will they ever regain the paradise they have lost?

At times funny, more often poignant, Captain Fantasic will be screened on 19 April at 8pm in The Royal Oak.

Other films coming up include Arrival (May), Hacksaw Ridge (June) and Lion (July)

GOOD COMPANIONS: The Bull Inn, Battle was the venue of the March meeting of The Good Companions, where a delicious two course meal was enjoyed. The staff at The Bull always make us feel like VIPs and really look after us, so much so that the chef came and asked if all the meals were okay. It was a bitterly cold & wet day when we met but there was a fire blazing away close to where we sat. Thank you to all staff at The Bull.

Our next meeting is on April 19th when we will meet at The King`s Head, Battle for lunch.

Speaking about saying thank you members of The Good Companions would like to say a big thank you to Whatlington Parish Council for their generous grant to the group this financial year.
