Winchelsea

Two significant archaeology books by local writers David and Barbara Martin are now available to download from the website: Winchelsea.com/martinbooks.html. The books are ‘New Winchelsea Sussex – A Medieval Port Town’ and ‘Excavations in Winchelsea, Sussex, 1974-2000’ both originally published in 2004. The material is copyright and is provided for personal and educational use only and is complete with text, diagrams and photos with over 200 pages per book. Jurat Mike de Smith explained in the Parish Magazine that he was very fortunate to have been permitted to put them online, as these books are very scarce and a valuable resource for the town. However downloading can have its difficulties, depending on the computer. Although the New Winchelsea book downloaded very well I found that the Excavations book did not want to download for some reason despite having slightly fewer pages. Sometimes it’s easier to order the book online and there are copies of the New Winchelsea book for sale but the Excavations in Winchelsea book appears to be unavailable to buy online.

A date for your diary is the united service held in the Methodist Chapel this year to link with the ‘Octave for Prayer for Christian Unity’ on Sunday January 19th at 3pm. The Rural Dean, Rev David Frost will be present as well as the Rector from St Thomas’ Church, Canon Robin Whitehead. These are always friendly occasions to get together and celebrate Christian faith. The church may be small but there is room for all.

Winchelsea Beach

To start the New Year and clear away the cobwebs Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has arranged a Coastal Walk of about two miles for Sunday January 5th at 10.30am. This is an opportunity to see some waders and waterfowl and maybe the odd bird of prey which make the Reserve their home during winter. No need to book, just meet at Rye Harbour car park at 10.30 am to be finished by 1 pm and all donations will be gratefully received.
