World War II bomb find closes road

Inspector James Scott of the Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team said an off-duty member of police staff with military experience found the device while using a metal detector in the High Woods.

The Army ordnance team identified the device as a two inch mortar bomb.

Inspector Scott said: "Evidently, it had not been fired and the fuse was in place."

Police closed the lane immediately as a safety precaution. It was not opened to traffic until 5.15pm after the device had been destroyed in a controlled explosion.

"The ordnance team had to undertake a second controlled explosion. The first one failed to take the fuse out."

The Inspector said it was fortunate that the member of police staff had military experience and identified the find as dangerous.
