Anglers reel in the trophies at Apuldram

It was truly a night to celebrate at the Apuldram Fishing and Boat Club.

That’s because it was the annual prizegiving event at the Fishbourne Centre for the Dell Quay club, with the silverware nicely shared among many members.

The photograph shows most of the winners but not included in the picture is Billy Spurway, a junior member who won the Foster Cup for a 3lb 2oz bass.

He also took the Peter Foster Cup for being for the most successful junior member of the year and the Junior Bass trophy, but was unable to be there on the evening to receive his three cups.

Those who received awards - and are in the picture - included Basil Merritt, who won the Rose Spurway Trophy, John Bassett, who took the Silver Fish Trophy and the Wittering Beach Cup, and Jean Bassett, who scooped the Ladies’ Shield for having top aggregate points in harbour competitions.

Andrew Wichtowski lifted the Tom Byerley Challenge Cup for a 6lb 1½oz mullet, Gareth Parfoot won the Clarke Richards Trophy for best flat fish at sea, the Morgan Cup for a 2lb 8oz flat fish in the harbour and also the award for the longest fish – a 117cm smoothhound.

Dave Barnes won the Ben Hide Cup with a 1lb bream, the Cole Cup for a 1lb eel caught in the harbour and also won £10 for the first flat fish of the season, a 6oz specimen.

Matt Whitfield took the Club Cup for a 1lb 4oz gurnard outside the harbour, while Paul Hurdle received three trophies - the Flounder Cup for a 1 lb 7oz flounder, also caught in the harbour, the Young Trophy for the top aggregate weight caught at sea and the Specimen Cup for a smooth hound 108cm long.

Allan Blamire won the Selby cup for an 11lb 4oz bass taken in the harbour.

He also lifted the Sue Webb Cup with a 6lb 3½oz best mullet from the harbour, the Horton Challenge Cup for the highest points total of the season and the best bass award, judged between two dates inside the harbour.

A week after prize night, the club held a third competition in their programme for the season and all members caught a number of small bass, which were returned back to the water being under size.

But one member, Andrew Wichtowski, won the day with a creditable bass weighing in at 3lb 11oz.

Members say they’re now set fair for a successful year.
