ARUN RUGBY TO GET RFU HELP

SUSSEX Rugby Football Union have earmarked both Arun and Shoreham among the 13 identified vulnerable clubs around Sussex where extra help is needed to keep them alive.

Roger Edmundson, secretary of Sussex RFU, said there were a number of reasons why a club could be in trouble: "There are those who are running on barely enough players to keep putting out a team each week and there is a national recruitment and retention campaign for those clubs.

"Other reasons may be a lack of volunteers behind the scenes, too few players in the specialist positions of front-row forwards, and the lack of proper ground facilities."

The County reckon that Arun are in a worse state than Shoreham, but neither have a clubhouse and use a school pitch for their home matches - Littlehampton School for Arun and Kings Manor for Shoreham. A club action plan needs to be put into place and the RFU booklet, ominously entitled 'Recruit or Die' will be of help to all clubs.
