Bexhill held in 10-goal thriller

BEXHILL United had to settle for a point after a thrilling 5-5 draw away to Upper Beeding in Sussex Division Three.

Yet, despite all the excitement, this was a poor result for United against the second-from-bottom side and raises further question marks about a defence that, having shipped 21 goals, has now conceded more times than all bar two other teams in the division.

Nonetheless, manager Billy Trivett is backing his rearguard to eventually come good. Asked if his team possesses a defence capable of sustaining a promotion challenge, Trivett replied: "I do think we've got a defence that's good enough, we need to gel a little bit as a unit. They are good enough defenders I'm sure. A breakdown of communication is perhaps a bit to do with it and perhaps we're a little bit hesitant."

On the other side of the coin, there's nothing too much wrong with the attacking side of their game. The five goals they scored here mean they are the division's second highest scorers with 21 goals from nine games and they also possess Division Three's leading individual scorer in Dave Carey, whose treble here took him to 10 for the campaign.

"Some of the football we played was just fantastic to watch," Trivett continued. "We've probably got the best footballing side in the division but if you've got serious ideas of promotion you would expect to try and get three points there."

Richard Anderson, following brilliant link up play with McPherson & Partners man of the match Steve Mote, got it back to 3-1 on the stroke of half time. Sam Thompson (53) fired in the next from 25 yards before Carey (58, 65, 75) put Bexhill firmly in the box seat.

Kingsley (80) made it 5-4 and the same player, whom Bexhill felt "was two-three yards offside", squared it up in the final minute.
