Bexhill upset local rivals

BEXHILL turned the form book on its head to record their first Sussex Division Two triumph of the season in a predictably tight duel with local rivals Sidley.

Aussie signing and Renown Travel man of the match Peter Lewis was the Bexhill hero, claiming 6-51 to rip the heart out of the Sidley batting.

Jubilant Bexhill skipper Steve Phillimore said: "It was very pleasing. It was a very tight game that could have gone either way but we took wickets at vital times."

Phillimore's opposite number Scott Woodroffe was gracious in defeat. He said: "It was a disappointing result but fair play to them, they played a little bit better than us in all departments and deserved to win. We let ourselves down a bit."

Bexhill began slowly with the bat and by the time 27 accurate overs had been bowled, just 46 runs had been recorded. But Lewis (25), Richie Harrison (26), Martin Phillimore (30), Matthew Blackman (25) and young protege Richie May (23) upped the tempo to post a defendable total of 182 despite the endeavour of Pakistani speedster Imran Javed (6-45).

Bexhill lost opening bowler Blackman to a calf injury in just the fifth over of the Sidley reply but Lewis took over his mantle to mastermind a compelling victory as Sidley were dismissed for 162.

Bexhill visit Preston Nomads and Sidley travel to Lewes Priory on Saturday June 7.
