Boxers reach national quarter-finals

WEST Hill Boxing Club will be represented by three fighters at the national quarter-finals stage of the NACYP Championships.

Jason Brooker, Bruce Lawson and Shaun Attrell will go in search of a place in the national last four at Lordswood, Kent, on Saturday November 13.

"I'm happy with three," said West Hill coach Dave Bishop. "They are all looking good."

Brooker (class A, under-48 kilos), who is yet to fight in the event as a result of walkovers, faces London's J. Kelly, Lawson (class A, under-60 kilos) is up against Jack Maroney (Fisher), whom he has beaten before when giving away four kilos, and Attrell (class B, under-51 kilos) has "a tough nut to crack" in Scott Burrell (Samuel Montague).

Lawson delivered "a good performance" in defeating J. O'Donnell (New Addington) on a majority decision in the regional finals at Aveley on Saturday, last week. Attrell, despite only operating at "three-quarter fitness", managed to deliver the "performance of a lifetime", forcing opponent Paul Fyson (Canvey) into such desperate tactics that he was disqualified in the second round.

Brothers Luke (class B, under-54 kilos) and Alfie Chapman (class C, under-75 kilos) weren't as successful, however.

Another fighter in countrywide last eight action is Ben White (class B, under-46 kilos), who travels to Leigh Park, Hampshire, this weekend in the Novice Cadets' Championship.

Barry Buchanan (under-64 kilos), meanwhile, produced a stunning last round to net a majority verdict at the Portsmouth Show on Saturday, where younger brother Dennis and Lee Jones both lost on points.
