Cut eye scuppers Simpson bid

Mikey Simpson’s hopes of glory in a national boxing championship were inadvertently ended by his own brother.

The ATHA Boxing Club talent was due to line-up in the quarter-finals of the Senior Novices Championship at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone last Friday night.

But Simpson had to pull out of the super heavyweight bout after sustaining a cut eye which required five stitches during a routine sparring session with younger brother Jamie three days beforehand.

The cut happened when Jamie, who himself is a promising boxer having recently turned 15, accidentally caught 17-year-old Mikey with his elbow, near the end of the session.

Mikey, who weighs in at 103 kilos, had won two fights to get to the national quarter-finals, the second of which was a Southern Counties final against Michael Joyce (Smallholdings ABC, Morden, Surrey) earlier this month.
