Clapp is back to captain Worthing

WORTHING Cricket Club chairman Tim Dunn has outlined a five-year plan for the club to be challenging at the top of the Sussex League Premier Division. And his first step has been to recruit the league's best batsman as the club's captain.

Last season, Dominic Clapp became only the third player to score 1,000 runs in a Sussex League season and he also captained Brighton & Hove to the Premier Division title.

In 19 matches, he struck two hundreds and eight half-centuries and next year, in Division 2, he will return to Worthing to skipper their side.

Worthing finished third from bottom, and next year there will be the new Sussex League Divisions 3 West and East, which means the bottom two teams in Division 2 will be relegated. Worthing finished bottom just two years ago.

Clapp, 27, and a former professional with Sussex and Hampshire, was a colt at Worthing and played for them earlier in his career but how did Worthing persuade him to come back? He explains: "I was a colt at Worthing, I know most of the lads and I want to pay something back to the club.

"I had a great time at Brighton, winning the league and scoring 1,029 runs. I'd struggle to beat that, so felt the time was right to come back."
