David joined the club in 1967 and since then has held various roles at the club and at the Saffrons – including first XI captain where he won the Sussex League title in 1987. He was also a member of the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club.

The club posted a tribute on their Facebook page. It said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Club Legend, David Lockyer, following a long and brave battle with illness.

“For the last 50 years Locko, as he was affectionately known by many, was an integral member of the Club. He first joined the club as a junior member in 1967 holding various roles both with Eastbourne CC itself as well as the over-arching Saffrons Sports Club where he was chairman from 2007-2020. On the field, he captained the 1st XI to a League title in 1987, and his advice and calming nature benefitted a huge number of players.

"Off the field, his contribution to the club was remarkable, holding almost every committee role possible during his time, as well as countless hours of umpiring and managing junior sides. Along with the late Peter Bibby, he laid the foundation and installed an ethos for everything that remains so great about our Club.
