Football legends delight fans

A GOOD turn-out of spectators saw Sidley United veterans win 2-0 against their Bexhill United counterparts in the "Legends of the Town" at the Polegrove.

The result meant fans got what they came to see as Bexhill chairman Dave Harris had to kiss Peter Heritage's feet.

An enthusiastic family-orientated gathering of around 240 all stayed to the end as Harris was forced to do the honours with Heritage, who made the most of the occasion by dragging his foot through the mud immediately beforehand.

Harris got his own back though, bundling Heritage over after completing the act. Harris quipped: "I might have to go to the doctors because I think I've got foot and mouth!"

Both sides contributed to a pleasing spectacle, displaying some simple but effective pass and move football which the modern day breed would have been well-advised to take in.

The goals came from Gerard Moyse and Heritage, while Sidley keeper Paul Sully was arguably the star of the show with a marvellous stop from Chris Bentley's drive.

The match raised 452 which will be shared between the two clubs. Harris hopes to make it an annual Christmas event and has a few surprises up his sleeve for Gullivers in 2004.
