However there was one award which the club was eventually able to make – when Tim Calloway, The Dean’s vice-chairman, recently presented the Clubman of the Year trophy to Giles Babb, landlord of local pub The Star & Garter, in recognition of the club’s gratitude and thanks for his backing.

East Dean said: “Giles and his staff have been extremely supportive of the club and the after-match welcome and hospitality has been much appreciated by all the players, club members and supporters.

“Although this season did get going after a delayed start, it is now unfortunately suspended due to the second lockdown, and while as yet there is no definite date for a restart, everyone is hopeful that we will soon be able to get going again.”

Babb, who also runs The Blue Bell in Emsworth, was delighted by the award.

He said: “It is an honour to receive the Clubman of the Year award.

“It is a pleasure to support the local football team and become part of the community.

“Grassroots football is as important to the fabric of local communities as the village pubs.

“The Star and Garter looks to continue its partnership with the Dean for many more seasons to come.”
