Chichester City's heroic effort is in vain at Lancing

CHICHESTER were defeated 2-1 at Lancing on Tuesday night '“ but Adie Girdler's side put in a heroic performance under the circumstances.

With several players either injured or unavailable, City arrived for the Sussex League first-division match with a bare 11 men and took the lead after six minutes with Tom Groom scoring from short range.

Michael Turvey was forced off injured at half-time and full-back Ben McDuffie was among the walking wounded, being converted to a makeshift striker.

Despite this, Chichester held out for an hour until Lancing levelled through a Sam Doran own goal. Then a few minutes from the finish, just when it looked like City were going to hold out for a draw, Wayne Joseph clinched the winner for the hosts.

The defeat came after City lost 5-1 in a league game at Lingfield on Saturday, Turvey the scorer. City go to Crowborough this Saturday, then Worthing visit Oaklands in the league next Tuesday.
