Portslade had already wrapped up the West Sussex Invitation League title a week earlier and posted 300-7 from 47 overs after winning the toss on Saturday.

Clymping responded with 250-7 from 47 overs as the game petered out into a draw but Glover said: “Clymping have got some very good players and I think they will do well next year, they’re going to be right up there.

“We didn’t want to lose our last game of the season, so we wanted to get up to a defendable total.

“They felt that we’d scored too many but if we’d declared earlier and had given them extra overs, they’d have got close to winning as they got to 250 quite comfortably. So, I definitely think it was the right decision to declare when we did.”
