Why the wait goes on for Lewes FC's women's team

While the rest of Lewes' teams had their seasons ended some time ago, the women's first team - because of the high level they play at - are still in limbo over whether they may resume the campaign and get it finished.

They play in the second tier of the FA NWL, the Championship, and were ninth out of 11 teams when fixtures were suspended.

As part of his video message to fans on the club website, Lewes director Charlies Dobres said: “All (men's) leagues from step three down including our own club have been officially terminated so the season is over and all results have been expunged, meaning no promotion or relegation.

"It’s fair to say a number of other clubs have been unhappy with this outcome but we do now have certainty.

“For our women’s first team, the FA have suspended the Super League and our league, the Championship. All leagues below us have also been terminated and results expunged. Suspension means that the current FA Women’s Championship season is still intended to restart at some point, though the date for that remains unclear.

“All our youth teams have of course ceased playing and training some time ago and all their leagues have been ended.”

Dobres said football would only restart when it was safe for all parties.

“We’re in constant conversation with the Isthmian League and FA about their plans for starting men’s and women’s football again. Everyone is focused on player and fan welfare so no risks will be taken and we’ll want to see detailed plans for the safety and health of all involved.

“It seems almost certain to us that any football that is able to restart will be behind closed doors so we are already working on plans to show men’s and women’s matches live, perhaps on a pay-per-view basis if it is possible. What do you think?

“We’ve been keeping very busy during this period as a board, be that league communication, future planning, player/staff communication and creating lots of online videos and blogs to keep you hopefully entertained and in touch with the club.

“Some staff and local players have even started a voluntary service to help local fans and others with things like shopping or even just a chat. There are details of that on our website.
