Chichester ladies savour salver win over veterans

The ladies’ section at Chichester Golf Club continued to enjoy the return to golf despite social restrictions - although have now been stopped in their tracks by a new lockdown.

They retained the Hunston Salver in the rearranged annual match against the vets, winning 4-2 in a four-ball better-ball game.

The team comprised Caroline Hawkes, Wendy Jeffery, Sue Ward, Sang Porter, Laura Thomas, Linda Eaton, Jane Buckley, Kathy Donohoe, Lynn Plowman, Jennifer Sherwood, Yvonne Dunckley, Heddie Straw.

In the recent captain versus vice-captain matches, the captain’s team narrowly won by two points in the Saturday game, a four-ball better-ball format, and then won again in Tuesday’s matchplay, the score being 12.5-8.5

* The Cowdray Park GC seniors have been keeping super-busy.

A record 115 played in the October Stableford on a glorious, sunny autumn day.

The course had recovered well from heavy rain and the greens were in good condition. Fifteen players who scored par or better.

Winner of division one was David Swan with 39 points, on countback from Dave Lucking.

In division two the winner was Terry Jasper who also scored 39, with Mick Folkes in second place with 38.

The following week, the seniors invited the ladies’ section to join them for a mixed competition of three balls, two best scores to count.

In rain and strong winds everyone took to the challenge and there were some decent scores.

Winners on countback were Peter Laws, Nick Parsons and Imke Sanderson with 82 points, (43 on the back nine) from Terry Jasper, Margaret Hoare and Gary Traviss, also with 82 (41 on back nine).

Third were Steve Dover, Georgie Miller and Mike Briant with 79 points.

The pinnacle of the seniors competitions is the seniors’ championship which featured 39 players who had qualified for the medal by winning or being runner-up in competitions during the year.

The winner – seniors’ champion of the year – is Steve Lucking with an excellent nett score of 65 (par 70).

Runner up was Eric Morrish witht 67 and tied third on 68 were John How and club vice-captain Dave Lucking.

Last year’s senior champion Richard Burden has won the club’s junior knockout for men. The 70-year-old was up against much younger opponents.
