Park overwhelm Priory in Shield final

CROWHURST Park clinched the Gordon Busbridge midweek cricket shield competition with an emphatic 74-run win over Hastings Priory.

Martin Barry, who smashed five sixes and a four in a blistering 46, and Keith Hobbs got Park off to an electrifying start with 60 coming up in the seventh over, before Barry was caught on the boundary looking to reach 50 with yet another six off Noble (2-30 off five overs).

Richard Coleman continued the momentum with 27 off 16 balls until he was caught behind by Jon Hancock. Victor Walcott then entered the fray and made Priory pay for dropping him second ball by smashing 48 off 37 balls which included the largest six of the evening - onto the pavilion roof - before being bowled in the penultimate over by Nick Stretton (2-26 off five).

It was left to Scott Pells and Ian Northorpe (21 not out) to see Park to the close with the latter taking 19 off the last over to see Park to 169-5.

Requiring to score at 8.5 runs an over, Priory felt they needed to attack from the start with Hancock being dropped on the boundary off his first ball from Walcott.

Hobbs (1-30) took the first wicket of Stretton with a spectacular caught and bowled, and Coleman (2-22 off five overs) removed the dangerous Hancock (16) next over followed by Carl Read two balls later. Some poor running between the wickets led to Toby Finzel's departure and Priory were struggling at 40-4 off seven overs. This soon became 42-5 with Gordon Busbridge man of the match Walcott (1-6 off three overs) bowling Josh Willis without troubling the score.

Youngsters Tim Hambridge and Adam Maharaj-Newman tried to repair the damage, but the introduction of spin doctor Paul Lindfield (3-18 off four overs) brought about their demise, as well as Noble who was bowled attempting an audacious reverse sweep. Lindfield was also involved in the unlucky dismissal of Andy Lamb who was run out backing up at the bowler's end.

A few hefty blows from Andy Dalton (18) delayed the inevitable before Barry brought the innings to and end on 95 with a stumping off the bowling of young Tom Wheeler (1-12).
