Rye on a foursomes high

THE Sussex County Ladies held its inter-club scratch knockout foursomes at Royal Eastbourne on Wednesday to Friday last week.

Of the 24 clubs that started the foursomes on the Wednesday, only four were left by Friday morning: Worthing vs Pyecombe and Rye vs Ham Manor.

Worthing beat Pyecombe to go into the final against Rye in the afternoon.

The Pyecombe girls, Aileen Greenfield and Alison Vermes, only started playing in this competition four years ago and have been placed 2nd, 1st, 3rd and 3rd, so they did well again this year but couldn't quite make the final.

The final yielded a nail-biting finish.

With three holes to go, Worthing's Karen Sykes and Paula Carver were two up against Rye's Lisa Webster and Debbie Richards.

However, Rye put on a spurt and finished birdie-birdie-par to take the title, 1 hole up.
